Composite Fillings
Do you have a toothache? If so, you may need composite fillings and it's important that you call our office as soon as possible. Our team will work hard to fit you into our schedule for an emergency appointment.
Harmful bacteria on teeth can lead to decay. Untreated decay may cause further complications, such as pain or infection. Composite fillings are a safe, effective solution to help preserve your teeth.
Here's what you need to know.
What to Expect
The sooner you seek treatment for a toothache, the better. During your appointment, our Grand Rapids dentist will examine the inside of your mouth and take X-rays. This will allow him to diagnose and treat the source of your dental pain.
If we detect cavities, we'll recommend composite fillings to restore your oral health. But it's important to remember that each patient is different. For example, we may recommend a dental crown to restore a tooth with a large cavity.
Before the procedure, we'll use a local anesthetic to numb your tooth. That way, you won't feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.
Once you're numb and comfortable, our dentist will remove the decayed part of your tooth. He’ll then restore your tooth with composite resin. That way, you’ll be able to eat, talk, and smile with confidence.
Composite vs. Amalgam Fillings
As the name suggests, we make composite fillings out of a composite resin. This resin is strong, durable, and matches the color of your natural enamel.
Unlike silver amalgam fillings, composite fillings don't expand and contract with temperature fluctuations. This means that you don't have to worry about your filling moving slightly the next time you sip a cup of hot coffee.
While amalgam fillings are completely safe, these tiny movements can let bacteria into your tooth over time. This can lead to cavities and other oral health issues in the long run.
